The El Camino debuted in 1959, featuring a sedan front clip and a pickup bed out back. As the muscle car craze took off, the El Camino–based on the Chevelle by this time–went along with it. As went Chevrolet, so went GMC, and there was a GMC version of the El Camino called the “Sprint.” The El Camino made it right up into the 1980s. The rise of the compact pickup market and increased competition from more efficient Japanese pickups spelled the end of the line, however.
